Our old house restoration adventure continues with a bathroom remodel. The bathroom has been marred by time. An iron bathtub connected to cast iron and steel pipes has been leaking for years. The bathroom floor and subfloor are water-damaged. The solid lath and plaster walls, characteristic of its era, are cracked and damaged in some areas. In our small bathroom design, we wanted our bathroom remodel to stay in line with the Victorian era colors while running modern plumbing and electrical. We will remove the bathtub and replace the area with a walk-in shower. After reviewing the current bathroom design, we decided that only a little will be saved from the current bathroom. We will save the door, wrought iron vent covers, and vintage hardware. Armed with our bathroom remodel ideas, we will start the bathroom demolition.
The first step of the bathroom remodel was a complete demolition. We planned to take the bathroom down to the wall studs while saving anything historically significant. To do this, we first removed the crumbling lath and plaster walls. This was necessary to allow us access to upgrade the plumbing and electrical. Next, we uprooted the fixtures, vanity, and bathtub, which were demolished and carried out in pieces. We also removed the lath and plaster ceiling, which was a dirty task due to the attic insulation. We had the attic insulation vacuumed out by professionals. Even the classic double-hung window was removed.
